Latex

Latex is extremely popular among erotic toys, most toys are at least to a minor extent made out of latex.

rubber Latex, also called natural rubber, would be a liquid consisting of several saps, mostly the sap attained out of the bark of the rubber tree (Hevea Brasilianis), which is mainly found within tropical areas located in Africa, Asia or South-America. The sap in its unprocessed form looks rather lactic and milky and is commonly harvested by scratching the surface of the tree bark of the rubber tree.

The sap is then further processed by combining it with ammonia in order to stabilise and thicken the liquid. By so-called vulcanisation (processing the material with sulphur), natural rubber can be transformed into processed rubber.

Both very thin surfaces, such as medical gloves or condoms as well as thick and robust shapes, for example in the case of dildos or clothes, can be made out of latex.

Care and maintenance
Depending on robustness and shape, latex can be vulnerable to UV-rays and might loose on flexibility and smoothness, with the surface becoming porose and stiff. To ensure that toys and clothes made out of latex keep their flexible and smooth shape, the following care and maintenance tips are recommended:

Toys

Kautschukbaum Due to frequent usage, toys made out of latex might become inflexible and stiff, with the surface slightly deteriorating by becoming porose and coarse. To keep toys new, smooth and flexible as long as possible, toys should be washed and cleaned with clean water and pH-neutral soap or a specialist cleaning-agent for toys. Since dirt and dust particles stick to the surface very easily, toys out of latex should be kept at a dry and clean place, if possible inside a bag or box made out of plastic or non-fuzzy fabrics.

Fashion

Kautschukbaum Clothes made out of latex are usually very fine and fragile in structure and potentially loose on brilliance and smoothness rather easily, thus frequent care and maintenance measures are required to keep latex clothes smooth and shiny.

After wearing, clothes should be cleaned with clean water by hand, since washing machines might destroy the fine latex structure. Liquids containing oils and fats might cause stains, hence any contact with such liquids should be avoided. An exception would be liquids containing silicone, which commonly do not harm latex. Hence, only care and cleaning products on the basis of silicone should be used.

Furthermore, latex clothes should not be folded, but stored using clothes-hangers instead. Moreover, UV-rays might damage the surface of latex clothes, consequently exposure to direct sun light should be avoided.

Latex allergy:
Although not very common, allergic reactions due to exposure to latex might occur and should be taken seriously.

There are two types of allergic reactions:

  • Type I – immediate allergic reactions at first contact with latex

  • Allergic reactions are caused by certain proteins, naturally occurring as a component of natural rubber sap, which are either released into the air and then inhaled, or occur on the surface and cause allergic reactions by direct contact with body wounds. Proteins are then able to enter the human body and penetrate the bloodstream, causing allergic reactions. Especially powdery surfaces such as the inner parts of medical gloves potentially release a significant amount of proteins into the air. In any case, allergic reactions immediate and occur already at first contact with latex.

  • Type IV – allergic reactions are not immediate but due to frequent contact

  • Allergic reactions are caused by certain chemicals or related particles which are used during the processing of natural rubber, rather than components of the actual material. In contrast to type I, allergic reactions are not immediate but caused by frequent utilization of latex products over a long period of time (often several years).

Symptoms indicating allergic reactions to latex:

  • Reddening of the skin, often accompanied by a minor to major feeling of itchiness during or after direct exposure to products made out of or containing latex.
  • Swellings of mucous membranes (mostly within areas located in the inner nose or in mouth and throat), accompanied by sneezing and a runny or blocked nose.
  • Reddening and itchiness of the eyes.
  • Swollen and itchy area located within and around the throat and inner mouth.

  • In case of one or more of the symptoms outlined above, please stop exposure immediately and contact a doctor.

Individuals suffering from allergic reactions to latex should avoid exposure to any products made out of or containing a significant amount of latex. Instead, erotic toys and products made out of alternative materials such as silicone or vinyl should be used. Especially vinyl is known for its excellence skin compatibility and tolerance with regards to individuals vulnerable to allergic reactions. At the same time, vinyl displays characteristics similar to those of latex, thus making it a favourable alternative option to latex, causing no damage to the performance of erotic-toys in terms of sexual satisfaction. Vinyl is a synthetic type of plastic, mainly consisting of ethylene and chlorine. Due to the high tolerance allergic individuals display towards vinyl, as opposed to other materials such as latex, vinyl is frequently used in the production of medical items such as oxygen masks, medical gloves or mouth pieces.
